Sterling Gains Continue

By

The pound has continued to perform well today with gains of over one cent against the US Dollar, nearly two cent gains against both the Australian and New Zealand Dollar and slight gains against the Euro. This positive movement for the Pound comes after yesterdays news that the UK economy grew more than predicted in the last quarter of 2009. Official figures released yesterday showed the UK economy had grown by 0.4% compared to the 0.3% figure that had been predicted and although the difference was slight it still gave the pound a much needed boost.

The market is off to a quiet start this week with only minimal losses for the Pound against the major currencies. With the budget released on Wednesday all eyes will be on this. With UK politics currently under the microscope it is likely that the budget will be used by Labour to push why they should be the party to lead the country out of recession at upcoming general election. So, there is a chance that the budget will turn out to be more of a party political broadcast but regardless it is likely to cause volatility in the lead up.
